Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant prescribed to treat two conditions, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy.
If you’re prescribed Adderall, then you may have received the medication’s generic forms before, amphetamine and dextroamphetamine salts.
These generic medications come in two primary types, immediate release (IR) and extended release (XR), and are manufactuered by many different pharmacutical companies.
Is there a 2025 recall for generic Adderall? What to know
A recall for Granules Pharmaceuticals Inc. generic Adderall extended release capsules packaged in 100-count bottles was announced on Aug. 28, 2025, according to the California State Board of Pharmacy.
Granules Pharmaceuticals Inc. Dextroamphetamine Saccharate, Amphetamine Aspartate Monohydrate, Dextroamphetamine Sulfate and Amphetamine Sulfate Extended-Release Capsules have been recalled because of an unknown impurity found in the product during a stability study.
Another company, Lannett Company, Inc., initiated a recall for Dextroamphetamine Saccharate, Amphetamine Aspartate, Dextroamphetamine Sulfate and Amphetamine Sulfate Tablets, 10 mg 100 count, according to the California State Board of Pharmacy on Aug. 21, 2025.
The recall was issued for distributed products at the retail level because of product bottle strength mislabeling, resulting in reduced drug efficacy and potentially temporary heightened symptoms of ADHD or narcolepsy.
While the California State Board of Pharmacy issued recall announcements, it’s likely that these generic versions were distributed in a number of U.S. states, including Louisiana, although specific availability can vary, according to Drugs.com.
How can I tell if my generic Adderall is being recalled?
If you have generic Adderall, check the manufacturer, lot number and expiration date for recalls. Also, pharmacies can tell you if the specific medication you have is part of a recall.
Is there still an Adderall shortage? What to know in Louisiana
There is an ongoing shortage of ADHD medications that is affecting the U.S., including Louisiana, which began in 2022 and continues to impact patients seeking the medication, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
While not all ADHD medications are facing a shortage, most of the common brand names are currently unavailable, says MEDvidi. If patients are unable to fill an Adderall prescription, it’s reccommended that patients consult their doctors, try other dosages and check with different pharmacies.
